Project Objectives:

  1. Conduct a land tenure analysis of mangrove landscape in Belize’s central and southern coastal-marine areas to understand ownership, viable areas for mangrove restoration, management and protection.
  2. Develop a blue carbon framework and engage landowners on greener development options.
  3. Upscale mangrove protection by providing an enabling environment, frameworks and tools for the creation of private and public mangrove reserves.
  4. Contribute to Belize’s target for mangrove restoration through capacity building, field-based actions and multi-stakeholder engagements.

Expected Outputs:

  1. Mangrove land tenure inventory database and tenure mapped inclusive of ownership type and property boundaries.
  2. Land tenure case study and a summary of the land tenure analysis for stakeholder engagement developed.
  3. Compiled focus groups/meetings/workshops summaries with government and private sector groups indicating agreed upon actions for mangrove management, protection and restoration.
  4. Proposed framework and tools to guide mangrove reservation designation developed.
  5. A list of framework and tools adopted by Belize Government to guide the designation of private mangrove reserves and conduct a case study on their success factors created.
  6. A mangrove restoration plan and case study detailing stakeholders’ engagements and success stories developed.
  7. 6 sets of communication materials produced and disseminated.
