Project Goal:

Effectively contribute to reducing vulnerability along the most at-risk segments of Belize’s coastal zone while increasing resilience for coastal communities and mangroves, and the services they provide.

Project Objectives:

  1. Conduct a land tenure analysis of mangrove landscape in Belize’s central and southern coastal-marine areas to understand ownership, viable areas for mangrove restoration, management and protection
  2. Develop a blue carbon framework and engage landowners on greener development options.
  3. Upscale mangrove protection by providing an enabling environment, frameworks and tools for the creation of private and public mangrove reserves.
  4. Contribute to Belize’s target for mangrove restoration through capacity building, field-based actions and multi-stakeholder engagements.

Expected Outputs:

  1. Create a mangrove land tenure inventory database and tenure map inclusive of ownership type and property boundaries.
  2. Develop a land tenure case study and a summary of the land tenure analysis for stakeholder engagement.
  3. Compile focus groups/meetings/workshops summaries with government and private sector groups indicating agreed upon actions for mangrove management, protection and restoration.
  4. Develop communication resources
  5. Develop a proposed framework and tools to guide mangrove reservation designation.
