The project aims to build a resilient, sustainable, and well-governed fisherfolk association in southern Belize. Given that small-scale fisheries are vital to the livelihoods of southern coastal communities, the Yugadan Fisherfolk Association will strengthen its administrative capacity to operate as an effective, credible organization. The project focuses on building organizational and governance systems, exploring diversified livelihood opportunities for members, and promoting environmental stewardship through accessible mechanisms, ultimately enabling southern fisherfolk to build long-term resilience, reduce pressure on marine resources, and secure more stable livelihoods.

Project Goal:

To strengthen the resilience, sustainability, and institutional capacity of southern fisherfolk through a multi-pronged approach that provides administrative capacity building to enhance organizational effectiveness, explores livelihood diversification opportunities, and promotes environmental stewardship through accessible mechanisms.

Project Objectives:

  1. By February 2027, at least 30 YFA fishers have attended training sessions on financial literacy, first aid, and deep-water fishing techniques, including the use of appropriate gear, navigation, and sustainable practices.
  2. By February 2027, YFA’s management and administrative capacity is strengthened through training workshops and tools, focussing on financial management and effective operations.
  3. By February 2027, the YFA has enhanced capability to create positive change within its membership and community through building capacity for advocacy and environmental stewardship.

Expected Outputs:

  1. 6 YFA fishers trained in sustainable deep-water fishing techniques and practices.
  2. 5 fishers equipped with deep-sea fishing gears.
  3. Deep sea fishing and best practices manual produced for YFA.
  4. 30 YFA Members/family members receive training to improve their individual fishing operations.
  5. 6 YFA fishers are actively engaged in a mentorship program.
  6. YFA has a functional office environment from which to administer the project and support association operations.
  7. YFA is managing its finances effectively and has established communications channels within its membership.
  8. YFA members are trained in advocacy to better serve the priorities of the membership.
  9. 5 YFA members attend exchange focused on engaging the community in environmental initiatives.
